The town is located on top of Mount San Giuliano (751 m) overlooking the city of Trapani. The name Erice comes from the Sicilian-Sicilian-Italic "Eryx" which means "mountain". It is a magnificent medieval village that contains myth, history, art, culture, landscape and environment. Legend has it founded by the mythical Erice, son of Venus, and in fact were the Punics to introduce the cult of the goddess of fertility, beauty and love.
To visit and admire the castle of Venus, identified as the temple of the goddess, the enclosure built by the Phoenicians around the sixth century BC, the cathedral dedicated to the Assumption, with the bell tower isolated as a tower (perhaps also as observation and defence) the castle of Pepoli and the medieval castle of Balio, the churches of San Francesco, San Giuliano and the church of San Pietro whose monastery is now home to the "Centro di cultura scientifica Ettore Majorana"
